Let’s be real, escaping the Waikiki resort bubble with a rental car full of gear for an entire day can feel overwhelming. I get it… but I promise that exploring the other parts of the island is where the real magic happens! If you’re hunting for the absolute best things to do in Kailua with kids, I’ve got you covered!
As a local mom and outdoor enthusiast, I’ve spent countless weekends finding the easiest ways to enjoy this little slice of paradise with my family. So whether you want a magical sunrise or a slow, low-stress day playing in calm waves, here is your realistic, dawn-to-dusk Kailua itinerary!
Before we dive into our day of adventure, let’s talk about a few quick tips to keeping the peace in the car. Taking just a few minutes to plan your drive will save you tons of time and keep everyone smiling in the back seat!
AVOID MORNING TRAFFIC
There is nothing quite like watching the sky turn a beautiful shade of pastel pink as the sun rises behind the iconic Mokulua Islands. A true dream scene. But which option you pick here will depend on how old your little ones are (and maybe how much coffee you’ve had).

If you have older kiddos or a sturdy, comfortable hiking child-carrier backpack for your toddler, the Lanikai pillbox hike (also known as the Kaiwa Ridge Trail) is an unforgettable way to welcome the day. It will take you approximately 45 minutes – hour to get up to the top if you’re taking your time. You can read my detailed post on the Lanikai Pillbox Hike here.

Mom Tip: Know that while the panoramic views at the top are jaw dropping, the very beginning of the trail is a steep, slippery dirt scramble with loose gravel. It would be extremely difficult for toddlers to do on their own. If you decide to tackle it, make sure everyone wears shoes with good grip, take your time, and enjoy the magical journey up!

If you are traveling with infants or toddlers who prefer running on flat ground, you don’t have to miss out on the magic of sunrise! Skip the climb entirely and head straight down to the powdery sand at Lanikai Beach. Park on any cross street in the neighborhood and walk down the nearest beach access to the shoreline. You’ll be able to watch the sun cast a radiant glow over the “Mokes” with zero climbing required.
Mom Tip: When parking in residential areas, especially at sunrise, be cognizant of how much noise you’re making. If you know your kids are going to be loud and fussy, it’s better to just park in the kailua boat harbor lot and walk in. Don’t stress yourself out before the day even begins.
Once the sun is up, those morning beach bellies are going to be rumbling! I’ve picked out a few of the best family restaurants in Kailua all of which have casual outdoor seating, fast service, and shorter wait times. (Essentials when doing kailua with kids!)

If your family loves a cozy, sit-down morning experience, head to the heart of Kailua town, Cinnamon’s. Hidden in a charming courtyard, it is incredibly kid-friendly and famous for its legendary guava chiffon and macadamia nut pancakes. It’s the perfect place to sit back, relax, and recap your morning adventures.
Alternatives: Nalu Health Bar (for sandwiches/acai bowls), or Kono’s (for breakfast burritos)
Mom Tip: Kailua is a breakfast haven with tons of tasty eateries. But being a mom myself… I have a hard time recommending anywhere that will take 45+ mins on average to get in. This is why you won’t see ultra popular restaurants (like Over Easy) on my family itineraries. We got things to do and places to see! 🙂

I love Kalapawai market and their iconic green building is where you’ll find my family for breakfast 9 times out of 10 when we’re eating out. It is the ultimate local spot to grab a hot latte, a breakfast sandwich, or fresh pastries. You can throw everything into your beach bag and head right back to the shore for a beautiful, impromptu morning picnic or you can eat at one of their many outdoor tables.
Mom Tip: There are now 2 Kalapawai locations in Kailua! One is literally steps away from the beach and the other is in the heart of kailua town. I frequent the Kailua town location as there are more tables and slightly better parking but the menus are exactly the same!

After filling those happy bellies, it is officially time for the main event—getting those little toes into the sand! While everyone has heard of Lanikai Beach, trying to find parking there with a trunk full of gear in the morning is anything but relaxing. Instead, head straight to Kalama Beach Park, the ultimate gem for families.

Kalamas is a dream for parents because it completely eliminates beach-day stress. Unlike other spots, it features a dedicated parking lot right at the entrance, so you don’t have to carry a sleepy toddler and three beach chairs a mile back to where you found street parking.
Even better? It is fully equipped with public showers, restrooms, and a dedicated lifeguard tower. Having that extra peace of mind while your little ones splash around in the waves makes the entire morning feel so much lighter and more peaceful.

Mom Tip: There isn’t a ton of shade at this beach so I always bring a pop up UV tent (in case I can’t snag a spot under the trees) to create a little shaded oasis for nap time and snack breaks!
As previously mentioned, the Windward side is famous for its refreshing trade winds but our breezy days can occasionally invite some unexpected ocean visitors. Keep a careful eye out for Portuguese Man-of-War. These are tiny, bright blue-purple stinging jellyfish that can wash up onto the shoreline after heavy winds. Before letting the kids run wild, do a quick sweep of the wet sand. If you spot any tiny blue bubbles, it’s a perfect excuse to build sandcastles up high on the dry sand instead!

After a fun morning at the beach, it’s time to head into the charming heart of Kailua Town. This area is surprisingly walkable, making it incredibly easy to push a stroller while exploring. It will also give your kids a break from the sun during the most unforgiving time of day.

If you’ve spent any time in Waikiki, you’ve probably seen the massive dinner lines wrapping around Paia Fish Market. Here is a major local secret: you can completely skip those hectic Waikiki crowds by eating at the Kailua location instead! The menu is exactly the same without the crowds.
The seafood is incredibly fresh, the portions are generous, and best of all, they have fantastic outdoor seating. It is the perfect setup for families—kids can be kids in the fresh air while you relax and enjoy a world-class fish taco or a plate of delicious fish and chips.
Alternatives with outdoor seating: Lanikai Brewing (wood fire pizzas for kids), Maui Brewing Company (order off your phone which reduces wait time + they often has live music)

If you are craving real, home made ice cream, head over to this gem. Please come again crafts their ice cream using fresh, using locally sourced ingredients, to create rich, unique flavors that both parents and kids love. It’s a great way to support local agriculture while enjoying an afternoon treat!

Looking for something refreshing, healthy, and deeply satisfying? Stop by Down to Earth to grab one of their famous mango sticky rice smoothies. These have become wildly popular among locals for a reason—they are packed with vibrant tropical flavor and make the perfect fuel for an active beach day.
Once everyone is happy and fueled up, take a stroll through some of Kailua’s most beloved local shops. Finding unique, authentic items will be so much more meaningful (and useful!) than picking up standard souvenirs at a resort gift shop! These are some of my personal favorites:

If you want a piece of authentic local style, you must pop into Fighting Eel. They are locally owned and famous for their ultra-comfortable, breezy clothing. Best of all? They design gorgeous matching pieces for families, which make for the most adorable vacation photos!

Soha Keiki is a complete dreamland for parents. It is dedicated entirely to little ones, filled with beautiful Hawaiian-themed children’s clothing, sweet books, and unique toys. It’s the perfect place to pick up a special keepsake for your little adventurer.
Personal Note: My favorite thing to buy here are their keiki poncho towels! They are perfect for days at the beach and also make the best gifts!

If you love bright, cheerful colors and beautifully curated styles, you will fall in love with Aloha Kira. They feature adorable apparel (mostly girls) and local accessories that are hard to pass up!
I had to include Protea Thrift for the mamas simply because it’s one of my favorite stores on the island! (it’s a bit of a walk outside the main kailua town area but well worth it if you are into thrifting!) Protea is a very curated thrift store that sells 2nd hand island/resort wear. I have found some of my most beautiful pieces there and all of them were in perfect condition!

No hot day in Kailua is complete without a stop at Island Snow! It is a legendary local favorite that blends cool surf apparel with premium shave ice. Treating the family to an island staple is the ultimate way to sweeten up your afternoon walk.

As a local, my favorite time to head to the world famous Lanikai beach is at 4 PM when the parking restrictions lift, and most tourists are heading home. It won’t be as sunny at this time and you’ll only have a couple of hours of daylight, but the easier parking logistics are well worth it for me and my family!
However, as a mom, I also know that this is when most kiddos are due for their nap, making it the perfect time to head back to Waikiki. The kids can nap in the AC while you beat any end of day traffic.

Now, one reason I would DEFINITELY recommend staying in Kailua till the end of the day is if you’ll be visiting on a full moon. (Check here) Lanikai Beach is the most spectacular place on the island to watch the night sky come alive.
As the daylight fades, you’ll get to see the moon rise directly over the ocean, casting a glowing path on the water right between the twin Mokulua Islands. It is an incredibly breathtaking experience for both adults and kids alike.

Bring a large, cozy beach blanket, pack some of those leftover local treats you picked up in town, and watch the kids gaze at the illuminated shoreline before heading back to your resort for a deep night of sleep.

Kailua is most known for its incredibly fine, powdery white sand—which feels completely different underfoot to the coarser sand in Waikiki. It’s also famous for breathtaking sunrises that emerge directly behind the iconic Mokulua Islands (the “Mokes”), making the coastline look like a living postcard.

The top activities include paddling out to the Mokes or taking on the local ridge hikes like Olomana ridge trail or the Lanikai Pillbox trail. However, these would be a little extreme with small kids. For families, the best options include visiting beautiful beaches, exploring the local boutiques, and grabbing refreshing local treats in the walkable town center.

Yes! Thanks to a protective outer reef and a gently sloping sandy ocean floor, the waves here remain relatively calm and predictable compared to other shores on Oahu.
However, the windward side does experience Portuguese man of war (jellyfish) more frequently than beaches in town.

One day is the perfect amount of time you need to see most of Kailua’s attractions! You’ll find that many locals also take day trips here and by evening/night things are much much quieter.

No, almost all of the beaches in kailua are sand bottoms so there will not be a lot to see. There are occasionally see sea turtles but you’ll be able to see them from standing when they surface. I wouldn’t recommend bringing or renting snorkel gear in Kailua.

Check out my other blog post specially about the best places to eat in Kailua!
Taking the leap to leave Waikiki for an entire day can feel like a logistical puzzle, but planning a thoughtful day trip is where your family will discover the true heart of Hawaii.
Kailua holds a slower, gentler rhythm that allows you to gather unforgettable vacation memories without the heavy crowds. By pacing your day around easy beach access points, local grinds, and shady midday strolls, you can easily design an island excursion that keeps everyone in the family smiling!
